Mission
Plant Sciences participates in world-class faculty, staff, and student AgResearch. From creating crops with higher nutritional value to growing safer turfgrass athletic fields, we ensure every study has real life solutions.
Description
The Department of Plant Sciences located within the Herbert College of Agriculture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In the Department of Plant Sciences, we aim to solve tomorrow’s problems through education, research, and Extension. We offer six undergraduate concentrations as well as Master’s and PhD programs.
Students enrolled in PLSC 122: Community Gardens will learn the basics of cultivating fruits, vegetables, and companion plants, get hands-on service-learning experience with area school gardens and community gardens, and learn from experts representing various food-focused community organizations and programs.
Education Programs
PLSC 122: Community Gardens students would work with teachers and students in the classroom to plan, plant, and harvest fruits, vegetables, and herbs in an existing school garden or greenhouse. Our undergraduates could work with, learn from, mentor, and even be tested by participating K-12 student one to three times in the spring semester. The Department of Plant Sciences will provide transportation for our students, seeds, plants, and other materials.
If your teachers, students, and administration enjoy working with us, we can work collaboratively to find grant funding and other resources to continue to grow your school’s garden in the future. If your school already partners with an organization on youth gardening, we would be happy to support the work they are already doing in your school.

Students enrolled in PLSC 421: Native Plants in the Landscape explore a variety of “natural” landscapes, learn how to identify and cultivate plants that are endemic to the greater Knoxville region, get hands-on landscape management experience through service projects, and learn directly from practitioners in the field, including landscape designers and architects, landscape managers, non-profits and government agencies.
Placemaking:
PLSC 421 students work in groups on a term project where they complete a site analysis, conceptual design, and plan for installation and maintenance for a landscape that is 0.3 acres (or about 15,000 square feet) with an emphasis on native plants. Groups have the freedom to choose the spot that they will work in, but they often enjoy partnering with area K-12 schools, teachers, and students. Please email aplante@utk.edu to learn more.
